ASK37: Candlelight
Description:
Candlelight was developed for Rainbow Gallery as a class at the 2004 Columbus TNNA trade show. The design uses five different horizontal bands to form an attractive round oriental-style lantern. Each band is embellished with an original couching pattern that has a main framework of horizontal laid rows tied down with Hungarian units. Each of the three main patterns has a different arrangement for the spacing between the laid rows and the Hungarian stitches and diverse accents are also used to embellish the remaining open areas of these composite patterns.In addition to learning some simple ways to produce variations from a single composite pattern, students will experience eight different Rainbow Gallery threads. The innovative sequences used show methods to conceal the traveling threads, to minimize the number of starting and ending threads, and to spread out the thread trails on the reverse side. These same concepts and refinements are useful for more general stitch sequences as well.
NOTE: The original design did not have a tassel but directions for this option are included in the last two pages of this version of the design. This small but sophisticated design would be an ideal group project for a guild and several threads can be shared among multiple participants.
