ASK39: Clowning Around
Description:
This whimsical clown was inspired by an original color pencil drawing that was purchased from a Russian artist in Moscow several years ago. The figure is outlined in back stitches, using a counted chart to maintain the bilateral symmetry. The costume has a variety of colorful composite patterns that were developed to suggest an appropriate patchwork style.The clown's tray has four toy horses on it with a nesting doll as the centerpiece. The horses are simply outlined in red with delicate open fillings but they have elegant chenille manes. The nesting doll is decorated in a variety of texture stitches.
Two elegant pillars form a vertical border along the sides of the figure and a dramatic open pattern of diamonds was developed for the background area. A number of decorative highlights are also included. Small gold beads embellish the slippers, bells adorn the tips of the hat, the horses have red jade hearts for tails, the doll is holding a "treasure" flower, two crystal buttons adorn the blouse, and seed beads are used in some of the costume patterns as well.
Color Choice:
The reds, black and turquoise areas must be used in all examples because the charm accents only come in these colors. However, the purple accents used for the original model were stitched in simple threads, so stitchers may choose to substitute warm yellows of greens here.
