ASK51: Desert Silhouette
Description:
Desert Silhouette is a small geometric design with a southwestern theme. The center area was inspired by the traditional Mexican star quilt design but four upright ovals rather than the usual diagonal ovals were used to create the circle. The ends of each oval have a recessed chevron or arrow shape, and this motif is expanded in the corners to form four-way chevrons with a center diamond area. Bright coral and aqua/jade threads are used in the diaper pattern inside the ovals which are surrounded by a handsome blackwork background pattern in dark aqua pearl cotton. The ground used is a vibrant hand-dyed pampered peach shade.
The dramatic border bands along the sides are stitched in partial Rhodes units that form elongated diamond shapes that are common in Native American art. Some subtle black highlights were also added to the border to balance the black ultrasuede silhouette of a roadrunner in the center of the design. A pattern for a coyote appliqué is also included.
